Preparing for a video capsule endoscopy doesn’t have to be overwhelming. When you know what to expect and how to prepare, the process becomes much smoother and more comfortable. This procedure gives your healthcare provider valuable insights into your digestive health using a small, swallowable camera. To ensure the capsule captures clear images, it's important that your digestive system is properly prepared.
Here’s how you can get ready for the procedure, step by step.
Follow Your Doctor’s Instructions Closely
Your preparation begins with the instructions your doctor gives you. These may be customized to suit your medical history and specific needs. Carefully read through everything and ask questions if anything is unclear.
Instructions typically include guidance on fasting, medication adjustments, and activity restrictions. By following them precisely, you help ensure the capsule captures the clearest images possible.
Stop Eating and Drinking as Directed
One of the most crucial steps in preparing is fasting. In most cases, you’ll be asked to stop eating and drinking at least 12 hours before your appointment. This gives your digestive system time to empty out, so nothing obstructs the camera’s view.
Some doctors allow clear liquids up to a certain time, but always double-check before consuming anything. If you accidentally eat or drink during the fasting window, be sure to let your doctor know.
Adjust Your Medications with Medical Guidance
Certain medications can interfere with the results of a video capsule endoscopy (VCE). If you're taking iron supplements, blood thinners, or other gastrointestinal medications, your doctor may advise stopping them temporarily.
Never stop or change your medication without clear medical instruction. If you have chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, your care team will help you plan accordingly to keep your health stable during the fasting period.
Arrange for a Comfortable Day
Although video capsule endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure and doesn’t require anesthesia, you’ll want to set yourself up for a stress-free day. Wear loose-fitting clothing, especially around the waist, to avoid disturbing the data recorder you'll wear during the test.
You may also be asked to limit physical activity while the capsule is in your system. This includes avoiding exercise or bending over frequently, as these movements could shift the recorder or alter image quality.
Arrive on Time and Prepared
Plan to arrive a little early for your appointment to complete any final paperwork or prep steps. You’ll swallow a capsule the size of a large vitamin, and your doctor will attach a sensor belt or adhesive patches connected to a recording device. Make sure your stomach is still empty when you arrive. Bring a list of your current medications, any allergies, and emergency contacts in case they’re needed.
Know What to Expect After Swallowing the Capsule
Once you swallow the capsule, it will begin capturing thousands of images as it travels through your digestive system. You can go about most of your daily activities, but you'll need to avoid strenuous exercise and follow any specific timing instructions from your doctor.
After about 8 hours, you'll return to have the data recorder removed. The capsule itself will exit your body naturally during a bowel movement, usually within a day or two. You don’t need to retrieve it.
